Shared note	Laurie worked in a market garden at one stage before leaving school & after he left school .He didnt talk much about about his life .He went & worked on Cargo Ships around N Z , Australia & Cook Islands for the Union Steamship Co.. Now recognised as the Merchant Navy . You signed on at Auckland & could finish at Sydney , you had to find your own way back or sign onto another ship . When Laurie got married to Martha she didnt like him being on boats she thought he might get drowned . He got a job for two weeks at the Farmers Fertiliser Works at Te Papapa as someone was sick . Then was taken on again when someone left . After a period of time he was made Mill Foreman a position he held until he had a heart attack & retired about 1959 . Before Laurie got married he & Harry built Laurie's house at 20 Huapai St. Onehunga for $800 . Laurie helped his son Laurence build young Laurence's house at 123 Wallace Rd. Mangere Bridge .[As told by Laurence 1991] . A good mother & father . When Laurie was not at sea he boarded with his mother . He also wrote to his father in Australia prior to about 1914 . His father's address was not known .
